The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has scolded the Delhi government. It because of the use and availability of fast growing plastic despite restrictions in the national capital. A bench headed by NGT Chief Justice Swatantra Kumar said that despite restrictions, plastic is available free of cost in every part of Delhi. The bench has directed the AAP government to implement this restriction strictly in the city. They have also demanded a detailed status report on this issue.
ISSUES RAISED UP BY NGT ON DELHI GOVERNMENT
The bench said, “Why the AAP is implementing the ban on plastic effectively? People are getting plastic free of cost from every part of the national capital. Why did not they take action against those who violated the ban? It is better for you to apply our order or else be serious action will be there against them. “An advocate appeared before the Tribunal on behalf of the Delhi Government. He said that they have seized the plastic and are taking action against the culprits.
Tribunal was hearing an appeal filed by Abhinav Gulariya, resident of Ropar . He had alleged that the ‘non-woven’ bags are still in use in the market which non-biodegradable. The green panel had banned the use of disposable plastic in Delhi and NCR region last year. This ban was effective from January 1 this year.
MAJOR RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED BY NGT
NGT had prohibited use of disposable plastic in the entire city, especially in hotels, restaurants, private and public events. They asked the Delhi government to take steps against “collection, sale and use” of such materials from January 1. Along with this, the Tribunal also said that vegetable vendors have to give the environmental compensation of 10 thousand rupees. Moreover abattoirs will also give the same for throwing garbage in the public places.
